How will the updates to the ACSE 7-16 Wind Load Provisions affect your building design?

Many of the wind load provisions in ASCE 7 have been updated with the development of the 2016 edition of the standard. These new provisions have been adopted into the 2018 International Building Code that will be available soon. Some of the major updates contained within the ASCE 7-16 Wind Load Provisions include a complete update of the wind speed maps, and the inclusion of a new Risk Category IV map, updated roof pressure coefficients and roof zoning for components and cladding, inclusion of the elevation factor and an expanded discussion on tornado design contained in the commentary. The reasons for these updates will be provided along with the effects that they will have on your building design.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to define how the new Elevation factor will affect your designs.
  • You will be able to recognize why and how the new roof pressure coefficients were developed.
  • You will be able to discuss why the new roof design pressures were needed.
  • You will be able to explain why the new wind speed maps give lower design wind speeds.
